Meet Evelina! - Westport Moms

How old are your kids and how long have you lived in Westport?  We have 5 kids, ages 8, 6, 2.5 and 9 month old twins.  We have lived in Fairfield Beach for almost 3 years.
What has been the most difficult age with your children to date? What helped you overcome the challenges at that time? The most difficult age has been elementary school age. It requires a lot more mental energy. I have a lot of physical energy, but helping the older kids navigate relationships, competition, and academics has been a lot. You never know if you are handling those situations properly as a parent. That’s the stuff that keeps me up at night.
What is your favorite family activity to do in Westport or the surrounding towns? Because we live so close to the beach we love to ride our bikes there or walk. We love to catch the low tide so the kids can run for miles in the shallow water and the babies can crawl around pretty safely.
What was your most memorable family vacation and why? Our most memorable family vacation was when we took our oldest two kids to Disney World, (and left the baby-our now 2 year old, to bond with the grandparents). They were at the most perfect age to appreciate the princesses and all the fairy tales. I loved seeing them so happy and it brought back a lot of memories for me as a child.
What is the best white lie you have told your kids? This has really backfired on me….my daughter still believes in fairies because of this…but I superimposed the tooth fairy onto a photo of my daughter and son sleeping and showed it to them the next day. This was a few years back and they still talk about how their mom has proof fairies exist. I’m still trying to think of an easy way out of that situation..
What’s your can’t live without beauty product?  My can’t live without beauty product has been the Soothing oil from Beauty Counter, I started using it about a year ago and it completely changed my skin.
What’s your favorite restaurant in town for a family dinner? A night out with friends? My kids’ favorite place for dinner is super duper weenie.  They love the causal atmosphere, the hot dogs come with a variety of toppings so there is a hot dog for everyone’s taste and the staff is very friendly. The Cottage is great for brunch, and I love Mecha for a casual dinner with friends.
How did you end up where you are now in terms of your job, or whatever passion project it is you might be doing? A few years ago we were living in Houston, TX for my husband’s job. When it was time to come back to the east coast I wanted to start something for myself.  I was inspired by the pretty boutiques they had in Houston and realized there was no place to shop for cute children’s clothing and gifts in the Darien/Rowayton area, an area that is bustling with young families and NYC transplants. I had no experience in buying, retail or even retail sales but I knew if the need was there I could make it work.  I basically learned as I went, reaching out to people who owned stores, buyers, anyone who’s  brain I could pick.  The entire process was a lot harder than I thought – financially, mentally and physically draining, and at the time I had two kids, a 4 year old and a 2 year old but I knew if I didn’t do it then, I would never do it. I plowed through and took it day by day, and eventually it came up on 3 years!! The years were the longest and the shortest at the same time, our lease in Darien had come to an end and a lease renewal didn’t work out. At that point I was forced to look back on the 3 years in Darien and decide do I want to move to another space in Darien ( I was commuting over an hour in traffic), and I was also pregnant with twins and due in 3 months. It was a hard decision to leave. I loved our customers there and we were in such a great flow. Business was great, but because we would not be able to stay in the same space anyway, we decided that Westport would make the most sense. So here we are now, the twins are 9 months old and we have been in Westport for 8 months.  It was a whirlwind to make the move happen but we made a great decision, we still see our Darien customers and we have added a bunch of new customers.  We are thrilled with the new store and enjoy still seeing our old customers and meeting all these great new families!
