Taking Charge: Empowering Families to Manage Food Allergies with Confidence and Promote Awareness Will Take Place on April 29, 2018 at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan
New Canaan, CT (April 2, 2018) – Food Allergy Connecticut announced its spring workshop, Taking Charge: Empowering Families to Manage Food Allergies with Confidence and Promote Awareness, will take place on Sunday, April 29th from 1 – 3pm at Saxe Middle School located at 468 South Avenue in New Canaan, CT.
Dr. Eyal Shemesh, Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Co-Director of the EMPOWER Program within the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute will lead the event. The EMPOWER program engages with clinical research to better understand the reasons for distress in food-allergic individuals and their families. Dr. Shemesh will speak to parents about enhancing, managing and promoting well-being and resiliency by discussing practical ways to help their food allergic children develop confidence and create food allergy awareness in their own communities.
During the speaker presentation for parents, there will be two age-specific breakout sessions for children led by social workers affiliated with the EMPOWER program. The children will participate in a developmentally appropriate discussion and craft, followed by entertainment. The FARE Teen Advisory Group (TAG) will be on hand to mentor and assist with the children’s activities.
“Managing life-threatening food allergies can take a toll on the food allergic child, as well as the whole family,” said Food Allergy Connecticut Co-Chair Jenny Andjelkovic of Wilton, CT. “We are thrilled to bring Dr. Shemesh and members of his EMPOWER team from Mount Sinai to the families of Connecticut to provide valuable insights into how to cope and provide resiliency.”
“We have heard from our members that they are yearning for information and connection,” said Food Allergy Connecticut Co-Chair Jocelyn Walls of New Canaan, CT. “This workshop will provide the opportunity to share resources, gain support and feel prepared to navigate social situations with reduced anxiety.”
Families are encouraged to register for the workshop as soon as possible so facilitators can plan content by age group accordingly. Registration is nearly full and will close on April 6th.
