When most people think of winter in New England, they picture bare branches and quiet gardens. But the truth is, the season doesn’t have to feel empty. With thoughtful plant choices, your landscape can carry color, texture, and even fragrance well into the cold months. Winter gardens are all about subtlety and resilience and finding beauty in the places you might least expect it.
After 50 years of designing and maintaining landscapes in Fairfield County, I’ve found that winter is often where good planning shines. It’s easy for a garden to look spectacular in May. The challenge and the reward are creating a property that holds interest in January.
Plants That Carry Through the Cold
There are a handful of plants that prove their worth year after year when everything else has gone dormant:
- Hellebores (Lenten Rose): These hardy perennials push up blooms in shades of white, pink, and plum when snow is still on the ground. Their evergreen foliage is just as valuable as their flowers.
- Witch Hazel: A true winter standout, witch hazel produces fragrant yellow or orange ribbon-like blooms that brighten the starkest days.
- Winterberry (Ilex verticillata): While technically a berry rather than a flower, its vivid red clusters are one of the boldest ways to bring life to a January landscape.
- Snowdrops: Among the earliest bloomers, snowdrops often appear while frost still lingers, a reminder that spring is on its way.
- Yellow Twig Dogwoods: Known for their striking golden stems, these shrubs glow against snow or evergreens, adding bold structure and contrast when most plants are bare.
A Garden That Lasts All Year
Winter may not offer the lushness of summer, but that’s part of its appeal. When designed with intention, a winter landscape feels calm, balanced, and quietly beautiful. For us, the goal has always been to create properties that don’t peak in a single season but evolve, surprise, and reward throughout the year.
A garden that holds interest in January shows the value of planning in June. That’s the rhythm of landscaping done well.
