In a town like Westport, there are many people who give back. Some do it visibly. Others do it quietly, year after year, without asking for recognition.
For more than four decades, Bill Evans has been one of those quiet pillars of our community.
A Westport resident for over 40 years, Bill is best known locally as the founder of WM Evans Painting, a family painting business he established in 1981 that many neighbors have welcomed into their homes. But beyond his professional life, Bill has dedicated decades to humanitarian work that has touched lives far beyond Fairfield County.
Since 2008, Bill has served as President of Connecticut Quest for Peace, a nonprofit that supports vulnerable communities both locally and internationally.
This work has existed quietly. Not because the impact was small, but because Bill has always preferred action over attention. The organization grew through word of mouth rather than media, powered by volunteers, generosity, and trust.
As Bill begins transitioning more of his time and energy toward this mission, the goal is simple: to let the community know this work exists, and that it continues to make a difference.
What Is Connecticut Quest for Peace?
Connecticut Quest for Peace is a nonprofit organization focused on humanitarian support, education, and long-term sustainability. Its work spans both local outreach and international aid, with a particular emphasis on communities in Nicaragua, Paraguay, Appalachia and Bridgeport.
Their efforts include:
- Education initiatives and scholarships
- Healthcare access and medical support
- School feeding programs
- Community pharmacies
- Distribution of essential supplies and humanitarian aid
Rather than short-term relief alone, the organization prioritizes programs that empower communities and create lasting change.
CT Quest For Peace works closely with local organizations including the National Charity League, Staples SLOBS, BuildOn, Coleytown Middle School Foreign Language Department and many more in our community.
Measuring Impact, Locally and Abroad
Over the years, Connecticut Quest for Peace has quietly accomplished extraordinary things:
Local Impact
- Ongoing aid and support for Bridgeport residents and families through a community closet. The community closet is open on Saturdays and Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seasonal clothing items are sold at affordable prices or provided at no cost to those most in need. All proceeds support the funding and shipment of containers to Latin America.
International Impact
- More than 60 shipping containers sent to Latin America
- Over 1,000,000 pieces of clothing distributed
- Educational support for more than 50 college students
- Healthcare services, feeding programs, and community pharmacies serving thousands of individuals
These numbers represent more than statistics. They represent dignity, opportunity, and stability for families who need it most.
A Story That Says It All
One of the most powerful examples of this impact comes from a student in a rural Nicaraguan community who received a scholarship through the organization.
He studied agronomy and, after completing his education, returned home not to flaunt, but to give back.
Today, he volunteers in local schools, teaching children how to grow food using organic, closed-loop farming techniques with natural fertilizers. Each grade level maintains its own garden. Families gain access to sustainable food sources. Children learn skills that last a lifetime.
It is a model of food security, education, and self-sufficiency. And it started with CT Quest For Peace.
