For those who haven’t heard, One Medical is the newest Primary Care Medicine practice here in Westport. We were lucky enough to talk to Bobby Wilson, the Connecticut Medical Director (and a local dad) about how he ended up where he is, and what makes One Medical unique and an option you may be interested in! We are thrilled to have you- and One Medical – here in Westport!
You were a practicing family medicine physician for One Medical in New York City for 10 years before becoming the Medical Director in Connecticut. Why were you initially drawn to One Medical? I was (and am) excited about being a primary care doctor in an organization looking to transform healthcare! The day I came to the office for my interview, I knew One Medical was the best place to be a provider and a patient – helpful staff at the front desk, beautiful offices, and providers excited about their work, who enjoy the benefits of having time with patients.
How is One Medical different from a traditional primary care practice? One Medical offers longer visit time with patients, and has great virtual resources for patients to get care in more ways than just an office visit. Patients can choose a One Medical primary care provider who really takes the time to know them, and we also offer access to virtual clinicians to care for patients 24/7. We use a collaborative, team-based approach to care for patients. There is one consistent medical record across our in-person offices and virtual providers, and a team of providers actively works to make sure patients’ care plans are on track. Anyone on a patient’s care team can pick up right where the
primary care provider left off.
Why is it important to establish care with a primary care provider? Can’t I just go see a doctor when I’m sick? Primary care is what we do best at One Medical – our primary care providers really get to know you, whether you are managing chronic conditions or facing a new symptom. We want to be your partner in your health over the long term, and we track the important health events throughout your life. The nice thing about being a patient at One Medical is that we have great access to care when you need to be seen quickly. In case your primary care provider does not have an opening, we ensure that patients have the option to see a different One Medical provider within a day or so.
What do you wish patients knew before joining One Medical? I wish patients knew that we can serve as their home base for medical care, and can coordinate with specialists outside of One Medical to get you the care you need. We have great relationships with specialists, and collaborate with them every day on patient care. While we refer patients to any practice of their choice, we partner with Hartford HealthCare locally to provide comprehensive care. Through our technology, we’re in close communication with specialists so that we can provide continuity through any follow-up.
One other thing I’d want patients to know is that there are a lot of One Medical patients living in Connecticut who for years went to our New York City offices for care – I would spread the word that they can get care locally now, too!
How have you enjoyed living in Connecticut since moving here last year? Living in Connecticut is great! I really enjoyed the beautiful spring bloom, the very pleasant summer, and fall leaves like I have never seen before. The coastline is so beautiful – I try to walk along the beach several times per week. All of our One Medical providers in Connecticut are locally based, and we love
being a part of the community we serve.
