Walk to End Epilepsy at Stamford’s Cove Island Park

May 4 @ 9:00 am

The Epilepsy Foundation of Connecticut (EFCT) is hosting their annual “Walk to End Epilepsy” at Stamford’s Cove Island Park on Saturday, May 4, 2024. This event is part of their larger walk series that will be held in 6 different Connecticut towns, serving as a bacon of hope and a call to action for individuals and families affected by epilepsy.

The Walk to End Epilepsy is more than just a walk. It is the largest fundraising and awareness event in Connecticut to benefit the local epilepsy community. Attendees can register as individuals or as a team. Check-in starts at 9:00 am and the walk itself starts at 10:00 am. Following the walk, there will be a celebration with free food, music, and purple give-a-ways. The event is completely free to attend, but donations are greatly appreciated. By registering for the Walk to End Epilepsy, participants will not only enjoy a day full of positivity and community spirit but will also contribute to a cause that directly impacts the lives of thousands in Connecticut living with epilepsy.

The goal is to raise awareness and understanding of epilepsy in Connecticut as well as $106,000 to support EFCT’s programs and services. EFCT provides many services to the local epilepsy community including support groups, financial assistance, educational programs, and a summer camp for youth living with epilepsy. Their mission is to support people impacted by epilepsy through advocacy, education, programs, and connections to ensure that they can live their best lives.

EFCT invites and encourages people who do not have a personal connection to epilepsy to attend the Walk to End Epilepsy and learn about the condition. The stigma of epilepsy can lead to workplace discrimination, school bullying, social isolation, and mental health challenges for those living with the condition. Awareness events like the Walk to End Epilepsy can help break the stigma and increase understanding of what epilepsy is.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by electrical and chemical disturbances in the brain that produce seizures. In the USA, one in 26 will be diagnosed with epilepsy. One in 10 people will have a seizure during their lifetime. There are more people living with epilepsy than Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy, combined.

Whether you are living with epilepsy, care for someone who is, or simply want to destigmatize having seizures, your presence and support can make a world of difference.
