Come kick-off Pride Month at the Drive-In with this 1995 road comedy directed by Beeban Kidron and starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo.
Elite Manhattan drag queens Vida Boheme (Swayze) and Noxeema Jackson (Snipes) impress regional judges in competition, securing berths in the Nationals in Los Angeles. When the two meet fellow contestant and drag novice Chi-Chi Rodriguez (Leguizamo) they agree to take the hopeless youngster under their joined wing. Soon the three set off on a madcap road trip across America and struggle to make it to Los Angeles in time. The film’s title refers to an iconic autographed photo of Julie Newmar that they carry with them on their journey. She even appears in the film as herself!
The opening and closing scenes were filmed in New York City featuring dozens of cameos of its local drag performers and underground stars including RuPaul, Joey Arias, Lady Bunny, Miss Understood, Candis Cayne, Flotilla DeBarge, Miss Coco Peru, and Quentin Crisp.
