Local Family Launches “Light for Kara” to Spread Awareness about Postpartum Depression

Local Family Launches “Light for Kara” to Spread Awareness about Postpartum Depression

Kara Kovlakas passed away on October 13, 2016 after battling postpartum depression and anxiety following the birth of her second child. Shortly after, Kara’s family launched ‘Light for Kara’, an advocacy and informational website, with the hope that by spreading awareness and sharing Kara’s story they could prevent another family from suffering the tragedy of losing a loved one to this treatable mental illness. In continuing with the mission, Kara’s family is hosting the first annual Light for Kara 5k for Maternal Mental Health, a 5k/1 mile walk/kids fun run, on Saturday, October 13 .

Meet Deb!

Meet Deb!

For anyone who loves a good story about finding your career path accidentally, meet Deb! Deb (mom to 3 in Westport) became a dance teacher when she offered to assist with her daughter’s dance class years ago. Though her daughter shortly thereafter quit the class, she continued teaching, and never stopped! Deb is now a beloved teacher at The Spot Just Dance in Norwalk who has instilled the love of dance (ballet, hip hop and more) in many over the years. Deb loves nothing more than a round of mini golf with the family, followed by a trip to Saugatuck Sweets, wouldn’t have minded being a Rockstar in another life, and never ate a fresh vegetable before the age of 13! Fun Fact – She also makes over 100 kugels during the Jewish Holidays, and all proceeds from their sales go to a family in need! Deb is open and honest about the ongoing challenges of parenthood, and the value in letting others provide a helping hand! She is also an inspiration for all of us moms out there; just remember, you never know when that next stage in your journey may be just around the corner!!

Meet Ronnie and Deanne

Meet Ronnie and Deanne

If balancing it all is something you struggle with much like we do, Dermatologists and new business partners, Deanne Robinson and Ronnie Klein are two amazing moms to watch! With 8 kids among them, these two powerhouse mommas are launching their own practice (a lifelong dream!) – Modern Dermatology – right here in Westport this summer and their own skin care line Pure BioDerm. They both find the age of 3 the toughest as kids are figuring out that balance between toddler and big kids, value honesty in friends first and foremost, and love Bar Taco. In another life, Deanne would try out for the Rockettes and Ronnie would be a tour guide; she can’t wait to take her kids to Africa when they’re old enough! These two moms admit the balance isn’t easy, but take pride in not losing any kids yet! As moms, skin care feels more important than ever; we are lucky to have these moms here to look out for us, and can’t wait to visit Modern Dermatology in the coming weeks!

Yale New Haven shares tips on preventing sunburn in children, and how best to handle it when it occurs!

Children often spend a good part of their day playing outdoors in the sun, especially during the summer. Make sure your child is protected from the harmful rays to avoid sunburn. Seek medical attention if sunburn is severe or forms blisters and if your child has symptoms of heat stress. Should you need them, emergency medicine specialists from Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital teamed up with Greenwich Hospital to provide the most advanced pediatric emergency services in the area.
